Hiring a stand builder is one of the highest-stakes calls you’ll make for a show — and one of the hardest to undo once the floor opens. Here is how to tell a real partner from a vendor before you sign anything.
Your booth is the one place your brand is judged in person, by the exact people you came to reach. When it works, it earns conversations you couldn’t buy any other way. When it fails, there’s no patch and no second take — the show happens once. In Colombia, where you may be coordinating across a time zone and a language, the wrong partner doesn’t just cost money. It costs the show.
Start with who actually builds it
The single most useful question is also the simplest: does this company design, produce, and install with its own team — or does it subcontract the parts it doesn’t do? Subcontracting isn’t automatically bad, but it’s where accountability quietly disappears. When the designer, the workshop, and the install crew all answer to different companies, every problem on-site becomes someone else’s fault. A partner who owns the whole chain has no one to point at but themselves — which is exactly the incentive you want.
Know what “custom” should mean
Plenty of builders use the word custom for what is really a modular system with your logo applied. Genuine custom means the structure itself is designed around your brand and the way visitors move through it — not adapted from a kit. The clearest test is fidelity: ask to see the same project as a 3D render and as a finished photo. If what they rendered is what they built, you’re looking at a team that can deliver a promise, not just draw one.
Read the work, not the portfolio
Any builder can show you a reel of beautiful renders. Ask harder questions. Request built photos — not visuals — of projects at the size and budget of yours. Ask for references you can contact, ideally from international clients who managed the project from abroad, because their experience will mirror yours. A confident builder hands these over without hesitation.
